Last week I answered what makes a ‘serious’ writer, and added that a ‘serious’ author was something else. I was asked via Facebook to elaborate on this.
Someone who wants to become a serious author is someone who does their best to write every day, no matter how much. Writing and reading are critical to improving as an author. As well as, rewriting, beta readers or critiques, even when it hurts. We aren’t always right, and others can teach us as much as any book on the craft.
If you want to become an author you have to put in the time, I believe. I’ve given up a lot of ‘waste time’ when I used to play video games or watch TV. Those things are fun, and I still do them, but I limit myself strictly, and reading and writing will always come first.
